Freedom is Just Another Word for Going Your Own Way

Freedom. Liberty. Self-determination. Free will. Choice.  These are the words that define the underlying nature of our souls as written by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Yet, this is not the world in which we live.  For in our world, people may claim such rights for themselves, but when push comes to shove, they deny them to others.

Our default is not to live and let live; it’s to deny others their freedom whenever it bumps up against what we want for ourselves.

Manipulation, control and aggression are the order of the day.  Rather than living by the golden rule, we rule by gold and force to get our way, and keep others who want something different from getting theirs.

No wonder we’re always fighting. It’s not that we can’t get along. We don’t want to.

We’re like a bunch of spoiled brats that have to get their way, and will scratch, claw, kick and scream to make sure we do.

It is this pursuit of something for ourselves — the utter selfishness of the individual ego — that fuels our existence.  It’s why we’re here.  It’s why we see our world as if we’re at its center.

Yet as we learn through socialization and living with others, such an egocentric effort must be moderated if we’re going to co-exist with the others in our lives, much less function as a whole in the conduct of our common affairs.

Freedom, or as I call it, the power of self-determination, vests in each of us. Yet that freedom is not an absolute. It demands we wield it with responsibility and restraint, ever-cognizant of the complex interplay of energies that living in this world entails.

So why do I bring up freedom today?

Freedom is only given lip-service by many.  For to them, your freedom is their dungeon. They’d just as soon lock you up (or worse) than allow you to live free of their dictates.

Our society is undergoing a seismic shift in its political landscape. The Establishment parties have lost, and an Independent Donald Trump is president.  His stated goal is to rain on their parade by undoing their efforts to impose their global vision and framework upon us all, and they are naturally fighting back.

Worse, they pit us against each other, dividing us by any means possible and emphasizing our differences until we’re all worked up into a frenzy ready to tear apart anyone who gets in our way.

The political parties pretend they care about us. But really, all they want is power to impose their vision of what our nation should be like, regardless of what the people really need or want.

That’s why Democrats and left-leaning protesters are fighting so hard to stop Trump.  He threatens to undo much of their hard work to force a system down our throats that serves not the people, but a monied and powerful elite that pull their strings.

But they don’t see it that way, and the puppeteers make sure they never will.

They see it as an affront to their religion of diversity above all.  So they work overtime to silence those who don’t share their penchant for more of the same.

Of course, they’re right. Trump does threaten their new world order, and is working rapidly to dismantle it.

Nevertheless, Trump’s success or failure aside, freedom remains the issue of the day. Will we preserve our freedom? Will we respect others’ freedoms as much as our own when we set course to the future we crave?

Certainly their must be some state of balance that would provide each the space to go their own way, without forcing others to do the same.  Maybe the job of those who are awakening is to keep searching until we find it.

If so, perhaps the promised Golden Age will one day materialize.

But if we don’t, we’re doomed to continue in mortal combat until one side or the other is destroyed.  Or our nation is pulled apart.

I suspect God had something more in mind.  Maybe, just maybe, we’ll wake up in time to find it.
