Merging Creationism and Evolution
The discussion of Creationism versus Evolution has captured the imagination for some time. Practical, scientific minded folk tend to believe Evolution is the way things develop over millions and billions of years, though they are hard pressed to definitively posit how it does this. Survival of the fittest is a good idea, but it doesn't explain how the fittest become that way, or what moves species to determine how they will deal with the competition they encounter.
Creationists tend to believe the world was created much as interpreted in the Bible. God waived his hand and figured a week would be enough time to make it happen and voila, there it was. The short time-frames give the Evolutionists a challenge that is so empirically overwhelming it can block a person's openness to any role a Higher Power might have in the process.
The question arises, is there room enough to believe in the evolving nature of the world/universe over eons of time, while trusting that it is all the creation of a Higher Power or God? Why can't we have it both ways with Creation and Evolution being essential aspects of God’s Nature? The Bible says we are born in the image and likeness of God. If this is true, then if we can understand our true nature, we might be able to catch a glimpse of the Nature of God. Maybe we’ve been trying to put the cart before the horse by trying to understand God without looking at who we are and how we grow.
In the case of humanity, it is clear that we grow and evolve throughout the course of our lifetimes and history. All of us start out as little children and go through years of growth and evolution including the evolution of many beliefs and attitudes along the way. We create within our lives from day one, and over time our creations become more complex and meaningful. As we get older as individuals and as cultures we continuously contribute to our evolution in the choices we make and the actions we take.
Recently it has been wisely reminded that life is a journey, not a destination. What if this is the way God not only sees it, but indeed lives it? If we can allow that God not only exists within creation, but is continuously giving birth and life to Itself within It, then it follows that evolution can be seen as the natural growth and developmental process of the Creator Itself.
From this viewpoint, the polarizing argument between Creationists and Evolutionists becomes an illusion that can finally be released. For if we make room in our minds for God to not only exist within Creation, but to be experiencing and enjoying the journey of it as well, we may then celebrate the perfect marriage between Creator, Creation and Evolution.
If it has taken God eons and eons of time within creation to get to this point of evolution, what’s so bad about that? Maybe God is just having the time of His/Her Life and is in no rush to the finish line.
